FIFA World Cup 2026

Residents of Walker County, Texas, particularly those near the I-45 corridor, should expect significant traffic congestion, increased regional activity, and a massive influx of international visitors traveling to Houston for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

As a major artery connecting North Texas to Houston—a host city with seven scheduled matches—I-45 will experience higher-than-normal traffic volume from early June through mid-July 2026.

Here is what residents in Walker County can expect during the tournament:

1. Intense Traffic and Travel Delays

 • I-45 Congestion: I-45 will experience severe congestion, with traffic potentially increasing by 20%-40% or more, especially on match days (June 14–July 4).

 • Travel Times: Commutes to and from Houston from Walker County will take significantly longer.

 • Roadwork Disruptions: Although TxDOT is pausing major construction on I-45 in the central Houston area from June 1 to August 1, 2026; to help traffic flow, the sheer volume of tourists will cause delays.

  2. High Visitor Influx and Regional Activity

 • International Crowds: More than 500,000 visitors are expected in Houston during the 30-day tournament, with many driving into the city.

 • Overflow Impact: While Huntsville/Walker County is not a host city, it lies on the primary route for visitors driving between Dallas and Houston, creating increased activity in hotels, restaurants, and gas stations along the corridor.

 • Regional Transit: Nearby Conroe is planning to offer shuttle services to NRG Stadium in Houston, which may affect travel to surrounding areas.

 3. Safety and Public Service Considerations

 • Law Enforcement Activity: Increased patrols and emergency response personnel will be active on I-45.

 • Emergency Delays: With increased travel, residents should anticipate longer response times for emergency services due to heavy congestion.

  4. Cultural and Event Excitement

 • Fan Activities: While the main fan festivals are in downtown Houston, the excitement and increased traffic will spread to nearby counties.

 • Unique Atmosphere: Residents can expect to see international fans and a "summer of soccer" atmosphere across Southeast Texas.

 Summary Tips for Residents

 • Plan Ahead: Avoid traveling to Houston on I-45 during peak match hours (check the 2026 schedule).

 • Allow Extra Time: Add significant time to any commute towards Houston during the June-July timeframe.

 • Stay Informed: Use commuter tools like Houston TranStar to monitor traffic.
